Statement
Each of us enters a world that will be vastly different from the one we leave. During our lifetimes we will witness advances in medicine and technology, changes in fashion, style, trends and preferences, improvement and decline in living standards, human rights and education. And all the while these interactions and observations will shape our feelings and attitudes about the world in which we live. We will alter and be altered by every experience. Every person we encounter, every sound we hear, each object we touch, everything that comes into our field of view. We will dream because of them, set our goals and standards according to them, express them in our art forms. With these considerations, we have chosen Alterations as the theme of our exhibit.
Our cloth will be altered, depicting those things that have altered us as individuals, communities, society, the planet and the universe. We will manipulate, dye, over dye, silkscreen, paint, discharge, foil, stitch, pierce and slash, creating our own interpretations of our continually changing realities. We will be altered by the process and the visitor will be altered by viewing the results.
The exhibit will display art cloth that explores the varying interpretations of the concept of Alterations, as selected by the chosen curator. Each participant will create a piece specifically for this exhibit, and will include a statement that reflects upon the artist’s interpretation of the theme.
Brief description of Art Cloth
Art Cloth is a whole cloth work that is created using dyes, paints, color removing agents, foils and other surface design techniques. Through a multitude of processes such as silk screening, stamping, or hand painting, the cloth takes on a life of its own. The artist works to layer not only imagery, but also a vision and story into the cloth. The results can be abstract and/or representational, but always seek to pull the viewer in to this very tactile medium.
The Art Cloth Network
The Art Cloth Network is a diverse group of artists from around the country who have come together with a common goal: to promote the medium of cloth as an art form and share it with those who are interested in knowing more. Each of our members brings a unique personal vision, sensibility and array of innovative artistic techniques to the creation of art cloth.
